Attorney Luis Enrique Salazar graduated from the American University in Washington, D.C., with a degree in Political Science. He continued his education in the nation’s capital at the American University Washington College of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctorate in 2019. While in law school, he took full advantage of the experience and further honed his advocacy skills. His legal education focused on immigration law and criminal defense, specializing in the immigration consequences for persons accused and/or convicted of crimes.
As a member of his law school’s nationally top-ranked mock trial team, he competed in New York, Philadelphia, and Puerto Rico. He also held multiple internships, externships, and law clerk positions. At the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, he served the D.C. and Maryland immigrant communities, working on Asylum, U-Visa, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status cases. In the Criminal Defense Practice at The Bronx Defenders, he served the South Bronx community, working on DUI cases under the supervision of licensed attorneys. He was also a student attorney with his law school’s Immigrant Justice Clinic, where he focused on cases at the intersection of criminal law and immigration law (Crimmigration).
Following law school, Attorney Salazar moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to work as a Public Defender for the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office. While awaiting licensure, Attorney Salazar worked for several immigration law firms in Colorado Springs as a law clerk and provided legal research for private attorneys through the Office of the Alternate Defense Counsel (“ADC”). Attorney Salazar has also provided legal research for criminal defense attorneys in New Mexico. His experiences in criminal defense and immigration law gave him further insight into the complexities of the work. Further, they solidified his desire and passion to serve clients in these legal fields.
Attorney Salazar’s passion, work ethic, and professionalism make him acutely aware of the responsibility and diligence required to serve clients adequately.
On a personal note, Attorney Luis Enrique Salazar was born in Miami, Florida, to immigrant parents from Venezuela and grew up in a bilingual household. Attorney Salazar is fluent in Spanish. He enjoys spending time with family, friends, and his cat Missy. He loves photography, being outdoors, watching sports, and great southwestern food.
Attorney Salazar is admitted to practice law by the State of New Mexico Supreme Court. He provides criminal defense representation to the rural communities in northern New Mexico.
